US Assistant Secretary Nisha Desai Biswal expressed grave concerns over Grameen Bank (GB), Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus said on Sunday. The Grameen Bank founder also added that the US official was interested in the future of the Nobel Prize winning microcredit institution. Yunus briefed media after holding a meeting with Nisha Biswal at the Gulshan residence of Dan W Mozena, the US ambassador to Bangladesh. The two were in a meeting at the residence of US ambassador to Dhaka, Dan W Mozena, in Gulshan. Nisha Biswal praised Bangladesh’s achievements and cautioned that it should not be hampered, Yunus said. “Nisha expressed her concerns about Grameen Bank and questioned its future. I informed her that all these issues were published in newspapers. Apart from Grameen Bank we also discussed a number of issues, including the ongoing political situation and the Myanmar situation, “he added. The Nobel laureate further said it was necessary to discuss the Myanmar issue as he was scheduled to visit the country in April, next year. Her visit comes during a political stand-off in Bangladesh between the two main political parties over how the January elections will be held. The official tour comes after US President Barack Obama’s instructions to “ramp up talks” with India over Bangladesh. Nisha Biswal arrived in Dhaka on Saturday after attending a US-India-Japan trilateral meet in Tokyo.
