A garment worker was allegedly killed for Tk15,000 dowry three months into an affair-marriage in the capital's Mirpur area.
The deceased, Shamsun Nahar, 18, daughter of Shahed Ali from Kishoreganj, was taken to DMCH for autopsy where Dhaka Tribune met her mother.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital doctors said this was a case of suicide, family said.
However, Swarupa Begum claimed otherwise. “My daughter married Kabir Hossain three months ago. It was an affair-marriage.”
The husband began demanding dowry since after the first month. “On Wednesday my daughter was tortured for Tk15,000. This is murder, not suicide,” Begum wailed.
Pallabi police station Sub Inspector Rasel said the body was recovered from a local hospital on Friday. “Preparations are on for a case. The husband and his family are now on the run.”
