Sources said the trained derailed around 4:30am as pickets uprooted the railway track of Lalmonirhat- Burimari land port route early this morning.

Railway official sources said rescue workers rushed to the spot and started working on recovering the derailed train.

Kaliganj police station Office-in-charge Amiruzzaman said: “Jamaat-e-Islami activist Suruz Miah and BNP activist Suman Miah were held in this regard.”

Lalmonirhat Railway GRP police station OC Shamsul Alam said, “Hartal supporters, including Jamaat-Shibir members uprooted the track stretched over 42 feet. They uprooted the track between the Tusbhandar and Kakina railway stations.”

He said railway officials were preparing to lodge a case while police have started conducting drives to arrest the culprits involved.

The Railway Control Room sources said, the train being derailed resulted in train communication between Lalmonirhat-Burimari land port to be suspended since dawn yesterday. Three trains cancelled their schedules.

Railway Control Room Emergency Officer, also the Railway Divisional Assistant Traffic Superintendent (ATS) Sazzad Hossain said: “The suspension of railway communication brought suffering to many people who were using the route for their emergency work as vehicles were not plying on the road due to the hartal.”
