8 more sustain burns during today's hartal

Eight bus passengers, including a student of Eden College, sustained severe burns when pickets set the bus on fire after dousing it with petrol, in the capital’s Matuail area on Tuesday afternoon.

The victims were: Abdul Mannan, 35, Abdur Rahim, 34, Md Tarek, 19, Abul Kalam, 45, Md Shuvo, 30, AB Siddique, 27, Abdul Hai Chowdhury, 40, and Eden College student Rabeya Akhter.

The injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital immediately after the attack. The condition of many of them was said to be critical, according to doctors at DMCH.

Salam Mia, a passenger of the bus said: “Some unidentified miscreants poured petrol inside the Gabtoli-bound bus and set it on fire at around 2:15pm when the bus had arrived near Mother and Child Hospital at Matuail in Demra. It left eight people injured.”

Several other passengers sustained minor injuries as well when jumping out of the bus during the arson attack, said witnesses.

Earlier on Sunday night, eight people sustained severe burns when pickets doused a passenger bus with petrol and lit it on fire, in the city’s Luxmi Bazar area.

Moreover, three other individuals also fell prey to other such arson attacks throughout the capital during the 84-hour nationwide shutdown.
