The mobile phone operator Robi on Monday deposited Tk10.2m from the 2012 profit to the government’s Workers Welfare Trust. With the deposit, Robi has become first mobile phone operator to contribute to the fund.
Labour Minister Raziuddin Ahmed Razu received a cheque worth the money from Robi’s Chief Human Resources Officer Matiul Islam Nowshad.
According to Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Act 2013, the companies are required to share 5% of their profit with the workers.
Robi made Tk991m profit in 2012 and it would have to share Tk45.5m.
From the shared amount it deposited Tk10.2m to the Workers Trust as per the law while the permanent employees will get the rest of the money.
“We always try to be the first in terms of compliance, which requires us to take much care of our workers and their privileges,” Mahmudur Rahman, Executive Vice President of Robi, told the Dhaka Tribune.
According to the high officials of Robi, the profit was shared to establish a “right to have profit” in the company.
The provision of companies’ 5% profit sharing was taken from the Statutory Rules and Order (SRO) 2010.
High officials at the labour ministry hoped that other operators would share profit shortly.
