Update : 11 Nov 2013, 08:21 AM

Train links to the south-western district of Khulna resumed seven hours after three carriages of a train derailed in Jessore on Monday.

Railway and police authorities ruled out any connection between the incident and the ongoing 84-hour nationwide shutdown.

Three carriages of the cargo train derailed in Meherullahnagar at around 6am, Senior Station Master of Jessore Railway Station Manik Chandra Sarker said.

The lines were restored around 1pm, he added.

Jessore Kotwali Police Station Sub Inspector Mohammad Tarique endorsed the information, and added that the incident was not tied to the hartal.

10 arrested in district

Police detained seven BNP and three Jamaat-e-Islami supporters from separate areas of the district on Sunday during the opposition’s nationwide shutdown.

They have been arrested on separate sabotage charges, Jessore police Assistant Superintendent Reshma Sharmin said.

Meanwhile the shutdown was being observed in a peaceful manner throughout the district, Jessore BNP unit General Secretary Syed Saberul Haque said.
