At least seven Dhaka University students were injured as police allegedly opened fire on the students in the capital’s Chankharpul at 11 pm on Saturday night.
Witnesses said some Shahidullah Hall students of DU had an altercation with some locals when they went to a restaurant for having dinner. At one stage, the locals beat up one of the students centring the altercation.
Later, President of Shahidullah hall unit Chhatra League Aminul Islam went there to mitigate the problem. However, the agitated locals beat the president up too, triggering a huge clash between the two groups: students and the locals.
On information, police rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control. But failing to disperse the crowd the law enforcers fired rubber bullets on the agitated people, leaving seven students injured.
University Proctor Amzad Ali claimed that the police could not fire on the students. Higher officials of Police informed that the involved police officials were closed and necessary actions would be taken against the accused, the proctor added.
The injured seven students are Mahfuz and Sahadat of Physics department, Faisal and Murad of Pharmacy department, Hasan of Zoology department, and Aminul Islam of Statistics department. They were given primary treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
