Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Professor Anwar Hossain received a death threat in a text message sent to his mobile phone on Thursday night.
Professor Anwar Hossain received the SMS at 9:21pm from another mobile phone (Ph:01786321251) and forwarded the text to the mobiles of journalists immediately after he received it.
The SMS read: “Son of a …... you did not leave the university yet. We will hurl bombs on you and your wife.” While talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Anwar Hossain said: “I have informed Dhaka district police superintendent Habibur Rahman and the JU registrar about the text and they assured me to take necessary measures in this regard.”
Jahangirnagar University Teachers’ Association (JUTA), a platform of teachers that wants the VC to resign, has been staging an all-out movement demanding the removal of the VC for the last couple of months.
On Saturday, the General Teachers’ Forum, another JU teachers’ organisation, also joined the agitation.
President Abdul Hamid, also the chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, has asked the agitating teachers to withdraw their indefinite strike unconditionally to allow the continuation of academic activities and to enable a congenial atmosphere the return to the campus.
