Some nine police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were injured in a clash with hartal supporters in Baroiyarhat area under Mirsarai Upazila in Chittagong on Tuesday afternoon, the second day of the 60-hour hartal.
The identity of the injured could not be known immediately.
Jorarganj police station Officer-in-charge Mohammad Iftekhar Hossain said: “A group of 700 to 800 pickets attacked the law enforcers with sharp weapons while they were patrolling in the area around 12:30pm.”
They locked into a clash when police fired at least 50 rounds of bullets and tear shells, leaving nine police personnel injured.
Sources said the pickets set off 20 cocktails during the clash.
Meanwhile, additional police were deployed in the area to avoid further untoward situations.
