Tripartite clash, JCD man dies in gunfire

A Chhatra Dal died and 25 others were injured including five by bullets in a triangular clash between Awami league, BNP and Jamaat- e-Islami near Dharla Bridge under Patgram upazila in Lalmonirhat on Monday, the first day of the 60-hour hartal enforced by 18-party alliance.

The deceased was identified as Nasir Uddin, 24, resident of Courttoli area in Patgram and an activist of Chhatra Dal’s Patgram upazila unit.

Police sources said BNP and Jamaat members locked into a clash with Awami League when the ruling party members hindered their procession.

They exploded 20 cocktails during the clash, leaving around 20 people injured.

Sources said 12 Awami League members and eight BNP-Jamaat were injured in the clash.

Police fired 10 rounds of tear shells and several rounds of bullets to disperse the crowd, leaving one dead on the spot and giving bullet wounds to five other.

The injured were admitted to Patgram upazila health complex and Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Lalmonirhat Superintendent of police Habibur Rahman said the activist was killed with a bullet but he was not killed in police firing.

He said: “We are trying to investigate who fired the bullets.”

The Patgram police station Officer-in-charge Sohrab Hossain said: “Police are in high alert to resist any kind of violence during the first day of hartal in Patgram.”
