'No comments about Jamaat until getting verdict copy'

Update : 03 Nov 2013, 03:19 PM

The Election Commission will not make any comments about Jamaat until they get a copy of the full verdict from high court, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said on Sunday.

The copy of the full verdict is yet to reach us, he said after a meeting with the election commissioners at the EC office.

On Saturday, the full verdict on Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration was released, where the High Court observed that the EC had not registered the party in 2008 “lawfully” and its charter contained elements contrary to the constitution and the election.

Regarding the election schedule, Rakibuddin said: “No decision has been taken as we are waiting for consensus among the political parties.”

“Every party should work towards a consensus and we hope that with participation of all, there will be a fair, neutral election,” he added.

He said the EC will wait till the last moment for consensus and then take necessary steps.
