Sea bandits demand Tk200,000 as ransom for 20 abducted fishermen and two fishing boats in Kuakata, fishermen who came back alive said.
The information was obtained from the affiliates of a fisherman who was rescued with gunshot wounds on Saturday.
About 25 trawlers were engaged in fishing when at least five trawlers full of bandits launched an attack beyond Sonar Char in the Bay of Bengal Friday night.
Fishermen said bandits attacked FB MaMoni-1 Friday night and opened fire. Crews of the boat surrendered when anchorman Abdul Haque, 55, was shot.
The bandits abducted fisherman Mahibul, 28, from scene and demanded Tk200,000 ransom.
Injured Abdul was brought to Alipur Ghat in critical condition before being taken to Barisal Shebachim Hospital's emergency unit.
Ansar Uddin Molla, chief of the association of local fish-stalkers, said dacoits attacked and abducted about 20 fishermen and 25 fishing boats in the last two days.
He could not point out a specific bandit racket, but said this was the act of a 'powerful' group.
Police were not available for comment, nor were there any cases filed while filing this report.
