At least 24 RMG factories were temporarily closed while one was closed for an indefinite period of time following the latest wave of labour unrest that broke out on Tuesday at Chandra Palli Biddut in Kaliakair, Gazipur, industrial police officials said.
Industrial police sources in the area said Ahsan Composite Mills was the last factory to be closed at 1pm yesterday while Interstoff Ltd was closed indefinitely.
OC of Gazipur Industrial Police Zakir Hossain said, “Workers at the Interstoff Ltd started protesting inside the factory and began abstaining from work since 8am in the morning, demanding a minimum wage of Tk8,000.”
After the news broke out, workers from other factories like Tropical Sweaters Ltd, Ahsan Composite, Equ Tex, Appex Holdings Ltd, Far East, Devine along with others joined the protests and started abstaining from work.
At one point of the protests, they vandalised a few factories around 11am in the morning.
Later, following a request by the police, workers and owners of the factories held a meeting. However, the workers did not change their position on the minimum wage.
Following the stalemate, authorities at the factories termed the situation risky and expressed their inability to carry out production.
