At least 50 people, including Gazipur City Corporation mayor, MA Mannan, were injured in a clash between BNP activists and police during the third day of the 60-hour hartal at Shibbari crossing in Joydebpur area, Gazipur, on Tuesday morning.
Thousands of BNP leaders and activists joined a procession after holding a rally in the Joydebpur bus stand area in support of the hartal this morning.
Sources said police tried to hinder the procession at Shibbari crossing while the BNP members were returning back to their party office.
The hartal supporters threw crude bombs at the procession and vandalised three CNG-run auto rickshaws.
They were locked in a clash with the law enforcers who charged forward with batons and fired tear-gas shells and warning shots to bring the situation under control. 50 people were injured.
Later the injured were rushed to the Gazipur Sadar Hospital and other clinics for treatment.
Around the same time police also arrested 10 people while picketing in Pubail, Tangi and Kaliganj areas.
Meanwhile the hartal supporters blocked Dhaka-Tangail highway for half an hour.
