At least 15 people were injured when shutdown supporters locked horns with law enforcers in Moktarbari area of Tongi Monday morning during the second day of the 60-hour opposition shutdown.
Witnesses said local BNP, led by Tongi Thana BNP Secretary Mahbubul Alam Shukkur and Jubo Dal leader Bosir Ahmed, brought out a procession around 7am.
Police intervened when the strike supporters reached Hossain Market area.
During this time, about 20 handmade bombs were exploded and at least five vehicles were vandalised in the area.
Police fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells to dispel the procession.
At least 15 people were injured during this time, among whom, two BNP supporters - Sumon and Tipu - were taken to Tongi Sadar Hospital.
Two people were reportedly held from the spot.
Tongi police station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad said pickets began pelting stones when police intervened the rally.
At one point, the pickets tried to set vehicles on fire. “Police were compelled to fire rubber bullets and teargas shells.”
Blasts, arson in Gazipur
Shutdown supporters blasted at least three handmade bombs and set a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw on fire in Joydevpur, Gazipur in the morning, witnesses said.
