Arson near PMO, cases over violence

A human-hauler was set on fire near the Prime Minister's Office in Tejgaon area during the opposition's 60-hour shutdown on Sunday night.

Alamgir Hossain, mobilising officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters in Dhaka, confirmed the news to Dhaka Tribune.

The incident that took place at 9:05pm did not leave any casualties, he added.

He also informed of three other arsons in the capital's Demra, Baridhara and Zirabo areas.

A bus near Demra staff quarters, another in Baridhara Natun Bazar and a microbus in Zirabo was set on fire around 8:30pm.

Bombs were blasted aiming the residences of Tureen Afroz, a prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, and Privetisation Commission Chairman Mirza Jalil.

Uttara police station Officer-in-charge Khandakar Rezaul Hassan said handmade bombs were hurled at Tureen Afroz's house around 8:45pm.

Tureen said the attack might have been a planned one.

Mirza Jalil, who is also an advisor to Bangladeseh Awami League, said two crude bombs were blasted near his Adabar residence around 9pm.

Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, the Privetisation Commission chairman said, “Some unknown criminals hurled two bombs targeting his house in his presence.”

“Both the bombs hit the grills of one of windows of his house and exploded creating heavy sound that created a panic among his family members”, said the AL Advisor.

Asked, Dr Jalil said he saw the criminals fleeing by a car after the bomb attack.

Sub-inspector Sirajul Islam of Adabar Police Station said after the incident they visited the spot and found marks of the explosions.

Cases over Sunday violence

Police filed 38 cases over Sunday shutdown violence. One of them included an arson case against BNP Vice Chairman Sadeq Hossain Khoka.

Deputy commissioner of Tejgaon division, Biplab Sarkar, told the Dhaka Tribune that Khoka was implicated in the case after one Jewel, who was arrested during an arson attempt, confessed that he set the bus to fire at the directives of Khoka.

According to the Media Centre of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, other cases were filed with Mirpur, Sher-e-Banglanagar, Kafrul, Darussalam, Ramna, Paltan, Motijheel, Demra, Jatrabari, Kadamtoli, Sabujbagh,Shahjahanpur, Gulshan, Bhatara and Uttara East Police Stations.
