Home ministry to keep special force on standby

Update : 24 Oct 2013, 09:30 AM

The home ministry has decided to keep a special force on standby to check potential security threats, amid fears the opposition might launch a series of agitations to coerce the government to meet their demands.

The force would be comprised of officials from BGB, Rab, Ansar and police, and deployed whenever and wherever a “security threat” arises, Shamsul HaqueTuku, the state minister for home affairs, said.

“The combined force would be deployed in the case of any security threats and deteriorating law and order that BNP and its allies might try to provoke.

He apprised reporters of the decision when asked about the ministry’s preparedness with regard to law and order in the event of any agitations launched by the opposition alliance.

He also said any act of subversion might jeopardise the process of reaching a consensus on the nature of the polls-time interim government, especially when both the party in power and that in opposition placed their own proposals on the negotiation table.

“It’s dialogues that we need at this moment.”

He said BNP could contribute to creating a congenial atmosphere for holding dialogues, but their attempt to hold a rally defying the Dhaka Metropolitan Police ban could ruin the possibility to reach a solution.

“Wherever BNP and allies try to commit any subversive activity, the combined forces will step in.”
