At least 15 people were injured in repeated clashes between two rival groups in Gaibandha over establishing supremacy at an auto-rickshaw and easy bike stand in the Purbapara area of the town.
Police said there was a dispute between the men of Mominpara and Sabujpara over collecting tolls from the stand. On Monday afternoon, people of the two areas engaged in an altercation over the issue, resulting in repeated clashes that continued until yesterday afternoon, they added.
During the clashes, the rival groups used lethal weapons and sticks and at least 15 people of both sides were injured, locals said, adding that they also damaged several shops at the Station Road area.
Police rushed to spot and fired 36 rounds of rubber bullets and 14 tear gas shells before bringing the situation under control.
Seven of the injured were admitted to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital, while three of them were later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated.
Officer-in-Charge of sadar police station Gopal Chandra Chakrabartee said additional law enforcers had been deployed to avert any untoward incident.
