Eight killed, 33 injured in road accidents

Eight people were jukked and at least 33 injured in separate road accidents in four districts in the last two days.

In Dhaka, a college girl named Marjana Jahan alias Munmun, was run over by a bus at TTpara Crossing on Sunday, reports UNB.

17-year old Marjana was a first year student of the Central Women’s College in Gupibagh.

Family members and witnesses said she was on her way to the college by a when a bus knocked her down around 7:45am, leaving her dead on the spot.

Following the accident, pedestrians caught the driver and started beating him. Later, police apprehended the driver.

The girl’s body was sent to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.

In Barisal, the driver was killed after a bus fell into a roadside ditch on the Barisal-Dhaka Highway yesterday.

Badal Mia, 38, was a driver of a Rohan Paribahan bus,  reports our Barisal correspondent.

Police said the passengers were rescued by them and the locals. The driver’s dead body was sent to the Barisal medical college morgue and an unnatural death case was lodged.

Meanwhile, a pedestrian was killed after being hit by a van near the bus stand area on the Nabinagar-Chandra Highway in Ashulia near Dhaka yesterday, reports BSS.

Imdadul Houqe, 50, was from Munshiganj village in Nilphamari. Police arrested the driver of the van and seized the vehicle.

In Comilla, three, including a minor boy, were killed and 25 others injured in separate road accidents in Daudkandi and Chouddagram upazilas yesterday, according to UNB.

The deceased could not be identified till the filing of this report.

Mizanur Rahman, OC of Daudkandi Highway police station, said a cab driver was killed and 15 were injured after a Comilla-bound bus hit the taxi on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Doulatpur around 2:30pm.

In another accident, a Comilla-bound bus rammed a microbus at Raipur around 2pm, killing its driver and leaving five others injured.

Meanwhile, five passengers of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw were injured when a Dhaka-bound bus crashed into the three-wheeler at Sahidnagar around 1pm.

In Chouddagram, an unidentified minor boy of about 11 was killed when a Chittagong-bound bus ran over him.

In Laxmipur, two people were killed and eight injured in a road accident near Laxmipur Bus Terminal area Saturday noon, reports BSS.

The dead were CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Yusuf Hossain Chutu, 28, and Omar Faruk, 30.

Eyewitness said a Bhola-bound bus of Toifa enterprise collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Laxmipur Bus Terminal area, leaving the auto-rickshaw driver and passengers critically injured.

Yusuf Hossain and Omar Faruk succumbed to their injuries on their way to hospital. The injured were admitted to the Sadar Hospital.

Officer-in-Charge Iqbal Hossain of Laxmipur Sadar Thana said the bus driver had managed to flee the scene after the accident.

A case was filed with Laxmipur Sadar Thana in this connection.
