CCC breaks eight-hour Eid pledge to clean port city

Update : 19 Oct 2013, 05:03 AM

Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) was still striving to clean up the port city three days after Eid-ul-Azha, despite having promised to remove all cattle wastes within eight hours.

While visiting different areas yesterday including Saraipapra, Muradpur, East Halishahar, Halishahar, Pathantuli and Alkaron, remains of sacrificial animals could be seen rotting by the roadside.

Asif Uddin, a resident at Halishahar area, said CCC cleaners had sprayed bleaching powder in several areas without removing all the remains.

Shah Forhad, a resident at Muradpur area, said they had informed the CCC control room about the dumped cattle wastes at several spots in the locality, but the area was still to be cleaned properly.

Safiqul Islam Siddique, acting chief conservancy officer of CCC, refuted such claims, saying the cleaning staffs had succeeded in making the city dirt free within eight hours as per as their pre-holiday commitment, and were now contending with fresh remains.

“There are wastes in some areas as people were still sacrificing animals, so we are still working on removing cattle wastes entirely,” he said, adding that the CCC had deployed additional cleaning staffs at Muradpur area, where most of the rawhide tanneries were located.

Md Hasan Liton, councillor of East Sholashahar ward, said they were engaged in cleaning activities but fresh wastes were being produced as people continued to sacrifice animals even after Eid day.

Safiqul said 2,500 cleaners were working to remove the cattle wastes across the city and 150 trucks had also been engaged in the dumping activity.
