Update : 17 Oct 2013, 11:15 AM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be making a speech addressing the nation on Friday evening.

Her Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said the speech would be aired on Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar at 7:30pm.

Sources said Hasina would speak on the current political situation of the country alongside a call to the opposition to participate in the next general elections.

She might also underline the government's constitutional duties.

Hasina will be making the speech less than a week before the end of the existing government rule.

The incumbent parliament session will expire on October 24 while the national elections are expected between October 25 and January 24 next year.

The elections will be held under the ruling government according to the 15th amendment made in 2011 by the Awami League-led government abolishing the provision of caretaker government.

BNP has been demanding restoration of the provision and has warned of dire consequences otherwise.

Opposition chief Khaleda Zia was determined to hold the October 25 BNP rally from where the party's plans for the future is expected to be rolled out.

Lately, a BNP leader had called activists to “be prepared with arms” while attending the rally.
