Secret prostitution chamber busted; 6 rescued

Update : 15 Oct 2013, 03:06 PM

Police rescued six girls kept in captivity for two years and forced into prostitution from Joypurhat’s Kalai upazila.

A local Upazila Parishad Member Sekandar Ali is said to be behind this, BBC Bangla reported citing police.

Kalai police station Officer-in-charge Ramjan Ali said the girls were recovered from a remote village in the upazila.

One of the girls managed to inform an outsider about the captivity through the cell phone of a customer, he said. “We followed the lead.”

Sekandar Ali and two of his wives are on the run, he said. “Four of his six wives have been arrested.”

A case has been filed against Sekandar Ali and his six wives under the trafficking act.

The ‘condemned’ hole

Joypurhat police Superintendent Hamidul Alam said the village, Harunza, was under the Ahmedabad union in the upazila.

The house had a chamber hidden away from public eyes, he said.

Two walls separated the eight feet by seven feet room from plain sight. A wardrobe was kept to conceal the small door leading entry to the chamber.

“We could not locate the hidden room in our primary investigation,” the SP said.

The girls were mostly kept confined inside the room, but were brought out upon a customer’s request, Alam said.
