Police arrested singer Arfin Rumey early on Saturday on charge of torturing his wife Ananya “for dowry.”
Ananya had filed a case against Rumey, accusing him of torturing her for dowry and even sometimes kicking her out of the house. She also included Rumey’s brother Yasin Roni and mother Nasima Begum as accused in the case.
The law enforcers detained Rumey and his brother under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and sent them to court. Nasima Begum could not be traced.
Md Azizul Haq, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur police station, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Rumey’s wife Ananya filed a case against him, his brother and mother, accusing them of torturing her. She was injured and showed us a medical report in support of her injuries.”
In the case, Ananya claimed that Rumey had married Kamrunnesa, an expatriate in the US, on October 24 “without her permission.”
However, Rumey had posted photographs with his wives together on Facebook and told the media that his first wife Ananya had given him the permission for his second marriage. Rumey said they were happy together.
When Dhaka Tribune contacted Ananya for her comments she did not answer the phone call.
Rumey and Ananya have a two and a half years old son.
