Cop’s wife dies in road crash

Update : 12 Oct 2013, 09:32 AM

A 35 year old mother-of-two died yesterday as a speedy passenger bus smashed into the rickshaw carrying her. Deceased Sanjida Akhter Saima was the wife of Sub-inspector Abu Sayeed who is with the eighth field unit of Rapid Action Battalion.

Sanjida was en route to her father-in-law’s residence in Sirajganj to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha when the collision took place, around 6am, in front of the BRTC bus depot at the capital’s Kamalapur area.

She was with her younger brother riding in a rickshaw while her son and daughter were in another.

A source at the Shahjahanpur police station said the four were going to the Kamalapur Railway Station to catch a train when a bus of Hanif Paribahan hit her rickshaw from behind.

A fatally injured Sanjida was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where she was declared dead.

Shariful Islam, Saima’s brother who survived the collision, said the bus came on them out of nowhere. “The driver had no control over it and we were hit before we could understand anything.”

Saima lived with her children at a rented apartment in Shahjahanpur while her husband was posted in Barisal.

Police said they had seized the bus but its driver and conductor, who ran away soon after the accident, were yet to be tracked down.
