Fire gutted a portion of an oil tanker loaded with 100 tonnes of furnace oil on Karnaphuli River near Anu Majhir Ghat in Chittagong Sadarghat area on Wednesday evening.

No casualty was reported in this regard, said fire service sources.

Senior Station Officer Jahirul Islam of Bandar Fire Station told Dhaka Tribune: “The fire originated from cigarette flame at the pump house of the stern of OT Alfat at around 5:30pm.”

On information, two units from Bandar Fire Station rushed to the spot and tried to douse the blaze, he said.

As the vessel was on the middle of the river, the fire fighters faced problems to extinguish; so, they sought help from Bangladesh Navy, he said.

Later, a unit from Bangladesh Navy rushed to the spot with BNS Rupsha and doused the fire at around 6:30pm, said the fire service official.

The fire service sources said fire gutted the pump house of the vessel while the flame could not touch the oil carrying tank.
