Sunday marks the 32nd death anniversary of veteran journalist Anwarul Islam Bobby, remembered for his pioneering contributions to English-language journalism in Bangladesh.

Bobby passed away on February 15, 1994, in Dubai while en route to London for treatment of leukemia.

He began his journalism career in 1964 with The Pakistan Observer, later becoming the youngest secretary-general of the All Pakistan Newspaper Society (APNS) at the time.

After the Liberation War, Bobby played an active role in rebuilding the country’s media landscape. He assisted Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni in founding The Bangladesh Times and Weekly Cinema. He later went on to establish Pulse, a medical weekly, and The Daily Life, widely regarded as the first regional English-language daily published from Chittagong. In Dhaka, he also founded The Morning Sun, which later ceased publication.

In a message marking the anniversary, Leena Islam, wife of the late journalist, recalled his lifelong dedication to journalism and requested family members, friends and well-wishers to pray for his departed soul.

Bobby is remembered as a committed journalist and media entrepreneur whose work left a lasting imprint on Bangladesh’s English-language press.
