Update : 05 Oct 2013, 06:05 AM

Authorities have prohibited Hilsha fishing in the Cox’s Bazar channel of the Bay of Bengal for 11 days starting from October 13.

Fishing, transport, stocking or sale of the national fish has been declared illegal during this period.

Bangladesh Navy and mobile courts will be on the alert for the cause.

The decision was taken in a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office to conserve Hilsha ahead of its breeding season.

Among the present in the meeting were: Hilsha conservation committee chief and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ruhul Amin and Cox’s Bazar fisheries research institute scientist Mohammad Zaher.

Others included association heads of district boat owners, fishermen and journalists.

The meeting underlined several problems towards conservation of Hilsha including lack of law enforcement and incentives for fishermen to keep from netting Hilsha.
