Update : 01 Oct 2013, 07:49 PM

The Primary Teachers Association of Bangladesh staged a hunger strike and a rally at the central Shaheed Minar in the capital on Tuesday to press home their two point demands.

The two point demands were ‘promoting the status of primary head masters to second class government officials and increasing the salary of the assistant teachers to one stage lower than the head master; and to reduce the complexity of the promotion process from assistant teachers to head masters.’

Thousands of teachers from different parts of the country joined the programme. Speaking at the rally the teachers said: “We have been continuing our movement for the last four years. We have submitted several written applications to relevant ministries, but they did not pay any heed to it.”

Teachers association President Abul Bashar said the Ministry of Primary and Mass education had accepted their demand but it has not been implemented by finance and public administration ministry. They were seeking the prime minister’s intervention into the matter.

He also declared that they would not leave the place until their demands were met. “If any officials from the prime minister makes any assurance to comply our demand, we will leave the place,” he added.

Primary Teachers Association General Secretary Md Anawrul Islam Tota, Graduate Teachers Association President Farid Uddin Kamal and General Secretary Badrul Alam were present in the rally.
