DU Music Department to celebrate DL Roy’s 150th birth anniversary

Department of Music, Dhaka University has arranged a two-day long music festival paying tribute to DL Roy which starts from on Wednesday at the TSC auditorium. This is the fifth time DU is arranging such a festival commemorating the great composer-lyricist who enrich the collection of Bangla music with more than 500 timeless songs. 

Chairman of Music Department, Shahnaz Nasrin Ila, said to Dhaka Tribune: “A staggering 90 performances will be showcased at the two-day long programmes.  Also, we will honour eminent Nazrul exponent Sudhin Das with a special award, for his immense contribution to music. Following the award giving ceremony, scholarships will be awarded to Nilufer Yasmin and Farid Shirin of the music department.”

“Besides arranging commemorative programmes, the department of music regularly celebrates programmes to mark national days and traditional festivals like International Mother Language Day, Independence Day, Victory Day, Pahela Falgun, Pahela Baishakh, Borsha Utsob, Nobanno Utshab and more,” she added.

The theme of this year’s festival is Roy’s composition style. The festival will also feature Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Sangeet, folk music, classical music and dance performances. Choreographed by Warda Rihab, artistes of Dhriti will perform three dance compositions.

Cultural Minister Abul Kalam Azad will inaugurate the festival as the chief guest. Vice Chancellor of DU AAMS Arefin Siddique and Pro-Vice Chancellor Nasrin Ahmed will be present as special guests on the occasion.
