People from different walks of life in the port city celebrated the tribunal verdict that awarded the death penalty to BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury for his involvement in war crimes.
Citizens brought out a number of processions in different areas of the city in order to express their immediate reaction over the verdict.
Our correspondent said people form different cultural organisations and political parties brought out processions welcoming the verdict in city’s Agrabad, Lalkhanbazar, Halishohor and Press Club areas.
City North and South unit Awami League brought out a procession, paraded the main roads and gathered in the central Shaheed Minar premises to celebrate the historic verdict.
On the other hand, BNP called a day-long hartal in the city for Wednesday protesting the verdict.
Earlier in the day, the International Crimes Tribunal awarded death penalty to BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury for his involvement in crimes against humanity committed in 1971.
