A college student reportedly killed herself by jumping off the roof of her aunt’s house in Capital’s Dakshin Monipur area on Saturday evening.
The deceased was identified as Rifat Tamanna Chaity, 16, an HSC student of the Shaheed Anwar Girls School and College and daughter of Jabed Ahmed, a retired air force officer.
Family sources said Chaity often visited her aunt Halima Akhter and before every visit, she used to make a prior call. But, today she did not make any call before visiting Halima.
Chaity’s aunt Halima Akter said: “She came here in the afternoon. Around 5pm, the guard of the house informed me that Chaity jumped of the roof of the five-storey building.”
Hearing the news, she rushed downstairs and found Chaity severely injured, Halima added.
Later, Chaity was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where on-duty doctor declared her dead around 6pm.
DMCH police outpost In-charge Mojammel Haque said the police station concerned had been informed and asked to look into the matter.
Chaity’s cousin Sumaiya said: “I have learned from Chaity’s mother Lovely Akter that she [Chaity] was upset as her mother rebuked her last night for not being attentive to studies.”
Sumaiya suspected Chaity might have decided to kill herself following the issue.
