Islami Chhatra Shibir, the youth affiliate of Jamaat-e-Islami, called a half-day shutdown through Greater Chittagong for Thursday.
A press release signed by District Shibir Press Secretary A Jamil said the 6am-1pm hartal would be effective through Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Bandarban, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar.
The shutdown was called protesting against the recent arrests of Shibir activists.
In pre-hartal violence, Shibir had blasted four handmade bombs and had vandalised at least eight vehicles in the city's Bahaddarhat area around 10am, Chandgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdur Rouf said.
Meanwhile, Kotwali police held 22 people from the city's DC Hill Park area around the same time.
Kotwali Circle Assistant Commissioner Mirza Sayem Mahmud said they had been detained over suspected links with subversive activities.
They are being held at Kotwali police station.
