Wali Ullah to be ousted

Update : 24 Sep 2013, 09:09 PM

The executive committee of Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) yesterday decided in principle to terminate its Director General Colonel (retired) Wali Ullah in the light of allegations of misuse of power, corruption, misbehavior with BOA members and unlawful activities during his eight-year reign.

However, the decision has not been taken officially yet, but top BOA officials confirmed that the move had been agreed on at an executive committee meeting yesterday, where BOA president General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan was present.

“Misuse of power, unethical activity, autocracy and misbehaviors are the reasons behind terminating him and the decision was taken after everyone agreed in principle. The verdict will be triggered soon,” said Mizanur Rahman Manu, vice-president of BOA yesterday.

One of BOA vice-presidents who requested anonymity said, “Many federation officials have complaints against him. He has been misbehaving with federation officials for five to six years.  The coldness between the two parties left the federation officials fuming for many days as they put their complaints to current secretary general (Syed Shahed Reza) after he got elected.”

Another member of BOA accused Wali of financial corruption. It was learnt that Wali’s monthly salary is Tk150,000 and one source said that Wali will get 33 months’ salary if he is removed. Manu, however, denied this. “It is not included in the by-laws. He created an administrative manual of his own which was not approved in any AGM or EGM,” he claimed.

Wali was appointed Chief Operation Officer (COO) in 2005 and later became CEO and Secretary General of Bangladesh Olympic Association.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Olympic Association honoured 22 athletes who created new national record in the last Bangladesh Games with Tk100,000 each yesterday.
