A local company announced the launch of the first ever hydro-automated dredger in the country on Monday, after the unsuccessful operation of some locally made dredgers.
United Dredging and Engineering Co Ltd manufactured the dredger named “United Dredger 1.”
Eastern Bank’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ali Reza Iftekhar formally unveiled its replica in the capital on Monday.
Many dredgers were previously manufactured in the country, but could not be operated successfully.
Officials hoped for a successful operation of “United Dredger 1” and claimed it could put an end to the country’s import of dredgers.
“With the launch of the dredger, one of my dreams has come true. If it is operated successfully, then we will not need to import dredgers anymore,” Ehsan Yusuf, managing director of United Dredging and Engineering, told the Dhaka Tribune.
“It is a unique invention. In a country like Bangladesh, which is crisscrossed by rivers, dredgers are in demand and considering this, we financed the project,” said Eastern Bank’s CEO Ali Reza Iftekhar.
He said the SME team of Eastern Bank has been giving its continuous support and is providing loans to the country’s young entrepreneurs.
“Financing the hydro-automated dredger was one such effort made by the bank,” added the Ali Reza.
Engineer Ruhul Kuddus, one of the two main engineers of the project, said: “Some eight such initiatives were taken earlier, but all of them were unsuccessful.”
“If the new dredger is a success, it would be the first of its kind in the country. Then, we can go into manufacturing more dredgers,” Ruhul Kuddus said.
