Chittagong remained severed from the rest of the country on Tuesday after bus owners called a strike following violence over the death of a student.
President of the bus owners' committee, Kafiluddin, told the Dhaka Tribune that they called a 24-hour strike protesting the vandalism along the highway.
Earlier in the morning, students blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Sitakunda, at around 10am, protesting the death of Rabiul Hossain Rubel, 22, a sixth semester BBA student at International Islamic University Chittagong.
He was run over by a bus sometime around 9:30am near the bypass area.
Sitakunda circle Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mohammad Iqbal Ali, said some hundreds of students engaged in acts of vandalism and arson for more than three hours.
Witnesses said at least three vehicles were torched and about a dozen others were vandalised during this period.
The bus owners strike was called in 60 routes from Chittagong.
Soon after the call, about a 30km tailback was seen on the highway.
