Update : 23 Sep 2013, 06:57 AM

Policemen chased away a procession by the Islami Chhatra Shibir – the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami – in Rajshahi city on Monday morning.

Witnesses said Shibir men brought out the procession around 11:10am. Police intervened when the rally reached Ganakpara intersection.

During this time, Shibir men blasted five handmade bombs in the area. Three policemen were injured at the scene, but their identities could not be confirmed.

Police fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells to dispel the crowd from the area.

Shibir activists vandalised an auto-rickshaw while fleeing the scene.

Boalia model police station Officer-in-charge Ziaur Rahman Zia said: “We had information that Shibir will try to bring out a procession. We were ready beforehand.”

The area was calm after the incident. Security was heightened in the area.
