Some 50 people were injured in a clash between police and RMG workers in the district’s Monipur area on Wednesday morning.
Source said thousands of workers of KCO Pyia Apparels, a concern of Elegance industrial Group, took to the street and tried to block the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in protest against the shutdown of the factory around 10:30am.
The workers were staging demonstration from last couple of days demanding wage hike that prompted an announcement through which the factory was closed for Wednesday.
Enraged by this, the workers tried to block the highway. At one stage, they locked into a clash with police as the law enforcers tried to remove them from the street, leaving at least 50 people injured.
Assistant superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police Mosaraf Hossain confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.
Police managed to bring the situation under control at about 12pm, he said.
