Update : 18 Sep 2013, 07:57 AM

Violence rocked Chittagong on Wednesday during the 48-hour shutdown called by Jamaat-e-Islami as pro-hartal activists opened fire at police in Satkania.

Two policemen were left with bullet-wounds in the incident.

Meanwhile, picketers blasted 10 handmade bombs, vandalised several vehicles and set one vehicle in fire inside the port city. Police said pro-shutdown activists were trying to place a blockade on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway.

Witnesses said, policemen from Jorpukur police outpost went to the spot and tried to disperse the picketers. The police action resulted in a chase and counter-chase between the law enforcers and pro-hartal activists. At one point of the conflict, shots were fired on the policemen.

Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Iltutmish of Chittagong South Zone said Constable Iqbal was shot in the leg during the conflict. He said another policeman was also injured in the violence but the official could not confirm the identity.

“Iqbal has been taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital,” the ASP added.

No arrests have yet been made over the incident, however the ASP said attempts were going on to apprehend the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, 18 people were held from a house in the port city around 6am over suspected involvement with activities of Islami Chhatra Shibir. Kotwali police Assistant Commissioner Mirza Sayem Mahmud confirmed the detention.
