BTCL workers stage sit-in in the capital

Update : 16 Sep 2013, 09:15 AM

Workers employed on a temporary basis in Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) staged a sit-in on Monday morning in front of the BTCL building in the capital, demanding that their jobs be made permanent.

The workers were paid on the basis of their work but their contracts had never been formalised in the last 10 to 12 years, alleged the demonstrating workers.

A committee of temporary workers organised the sit-in which took place at around 10:30am, seeking an announcement from BTCL hiring them as permanent employees in the organisation.

The 2,932 BTCL employees are in a situation where they are drawing a meagre payment for their work, says Co-Convenor of the Temporary Workers’ Committee Rafiqul Islam Selim.

Convenor of the committee Humayun Kabir said: “The BTCL authority on March, 2010, held a board meeting regarding this matter to formulate a salary structure for the temporary workers and make them permanent.”

He alleged that no more developments had been made concerning the issue since then.

The workers also alleged that the corrupt officials of BTCL had benefitted from pursuing changes in their favour at the expense of the employees.
