Garment factory catches fire in city

Update : 15 Sep 2013, 07:41 AM

A garment factory was devastated when fire broke out in an eight-storey building in the capital’s Mothertek Nondipara area on Sunday. No casualty, however, was reported.

Workers at the Cecily Garments Factory Ltd, which caught fire around 12pm, managed to exit through the backdoors without being harmed.

The fire, which damaged substantially the two floors of the building in which the factory was housed, was extinguished after a frantic two-hour effort with the assistance of 10 fire-fighting units.

Major Mahbubur Rahman, director of operations at the Fire Service and Civil Defence(FSCD) department, said the fire originated on the sixth floor and spread to the fifth which was used as the factory’s storehouse.

“We used heavy iron-loaders and other equipment which helped us bring the fire under control, within a relatively short time. The damage could be a lot worse if we failed to respond in time,” he added.

However, the cause of the fire could not be ascertained immediately, but FSCD officials said it could be linked to the presence of highly inflammable substances in the floors.

The fire spread rapidly because of an electrical short circuit, said an official.
