Petrobangla asks PDB to cut gas consumption

Update : 12 Sep 2013, 08:03 PM

Petrobangla has suggested that the Power Development Board reduce gas consumption for generating electricity because of a shortage of gas supply.

The decision was made at a meeting with the PDB on Thursday at Petrobangla headquarters. Petrobangla Director (operations) Md Quamruzzaman, PDB Member (generation) Jalal Uddin Ahmed Choudhury and other PDB and Petrobangla officials were present at the meeting.

“We have advised them [PDB] to reduce the use of gas at Ashuganj and Siddhirganj power plants as the supply of gas is falling,” Quamruzzaman told the Dhaka Tribune. “We supply to 180 fertiliser factories and it has been necessary to cut use of gas in those power plants.”

Jalal Uddin said: “We will not cut gas use as the demand of electricity is still high.” But Quamruzzaman said Petrobangla would be compelled to cut supply if the PDB did not cut down on its usage.

Gas crisis has been acute in the households and CNG stations in the capital for the last few days.

Hundreds of residences in Mohammodpur, Mirpur, Kafrul, Pallabi, Kazipara, Taltola, Shewrapara, Tejgaon, Khilgaon, Malibag, Shyamoli, Kalyanpur, east Rajabazar, and some other areas are now suffering from gas shortage.

However, power generation has increased in some gas-fired power plants while production at three fertiliser factories has also resumed after Petrobangla increased gas supply for power generation to 968mmcfd from 800mmcfd.

According to Petrobangla, the current demand of gas across the country is 3,000mmcfd while the production stands at 2,303mmcfd.
