Update : 12 Sep 2013, 07:19 PM

The first assembly of the 19th parliament session was adjourned on Thursday evening after 50 minutes.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury deferred the parliament until September 15 due to the recent death of Awami League lawmaker Golam Sabur.

The first assembly of the 19th session began at 5pm.

In her opening statement, the speaker said the next general elections must be held between October 25 and January 24 next year.

This running session of the ninth parliament will continue until October 24, a meeting of the business advisory committee decided.

Leader of the parliament, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, spoke on the opening day. In her speech, she mourned the death of Golam Sabur.

The parliament stood to observe one minute of silence in honour of the late Golam Sabur, who was killed in a road accident late July.

A short prayer was held at the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) for the late lawmaker before the speaker adjourned parliament at 5:50pm.

The opposition BNP, who said they would not be attending parliament and were discussing options for resigning from the JS, were not seen in the assembly.
