Update : 08 Sep 2013, 03:42 AM

An early morning torrential rain paralysed city life in Dhaka on Sunday.

The rain, which began to pour in around 8:15am in the morning, inundated roads throughout Mirpur road, Panthapath, Mirpur road, Kawran Bazar and many other important areas in the capital.

Long tailbacks were seen in these areas in the rush hours of the morning causing inconvenience to the public.

Office-goers were seen waiting out the rain under the shelter of roadside shades.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) official Mohammad Abdul Ali told Dhaka Tribune that Dhaka had recorded 23mm rainfall in three hours from 6am to 9am.

BMD duty forecast control room told Dhaka Tribune that light-moderate rainfall was prevailing through other parts of the country.

Heavy clouds were seen hovering over Dhaka from 6am.

Rumana Habib said it had taken her three hours to reach Panthapath from Baridhara. "Gulshan and Banani were relatively clear, but the experience through Manik Mia Avenue, Mirpur Road and Panthapath was painful."

Tallina Zamila Khan said she had to take a CNG and drive through alleys to avoid the tailback stretching from House Building in Uttara to Kawran Bazar.
