‘Parliament or no parliament EC to decide’

Update : 07 Sep 2013, 06:41 PM

Prime Minister’s adviser HT Imam on Saturday said the final decision to dissolve or not to dissolve parliament ahead of the election will be taken after discussions with the Election Commission.

“The main activities over the polls are being carried out by the Election Commission. The EC can take a decision on ensuring a level-playing field for the contesting parties. If any body remains MP, s/he will be a titular MP,” he said, according to UNB.

HT Imam made the remark while taking part in the BBC Sanglap, a programme on contemporary issue.

When the moderator asked that Sheikh Hasina in her meeting with the secretaries said that parliament and cabinet will not be dissolved during election-time, the adviser said, “I was present at the meeting. She (PM) didn’t say exactly in that way. She said t might be.”

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the level-playing field would not be ensured keeping parliament functional. “If the government is cordial to ensure a level-playing field, it’ll have to revive the caretaker government system,” he added.

Chief Executive Officer of Brotee Sharmeen Murshid said the government would face a big challenge if it does not dissolve parliament.

Prof Borhan Uddin Khan of Dhaka University’s Law Department also took part in the Sanglap.

BBC journalist Akbar Hossain moderated the programme.
