444 Bangladeshis held in Malaysia

Update : 06 Sep 2013, 03:05 PM

A total of 444 Bangladesh nationals have been detained during September 1-3 countrywide crackdown in Malaysia for various offences, says Foreign Ministry official source on Friday.

“Our Mission in Kuala Lumpur is waiting for formal notification on the number and details of the Bangladesh nationals detained through special crackdown,” Director General (DG-EP) of the Foreign Ministry M Shameem Ahsan said.

He said the Department of Immigration of Malaysia has informed the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur unofficially that during the special drive – Operasi PATI Bersepadu – a total of 444 Bangladesh nationals have been detained.

“However, it’s yet to be clarified by the Malaysian Immigration Department as to how many of them have been detained through the ongoing special crackdown,” he added.

Earlier, Expatriates’ Welfare and Oversees Employment Minister Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain said the government will take all necessary steps to bring back the Bangladeshi workers detained in Malaysia.

Talking to UNB, he, however, said the Malaysian government will take legal action against the Bangladeshi expatriates in Malaysia who have been detained for violating immigrant rules.
