Government to hold talks with Chittagong traders soon

An inter-ministerial meeting will be held soon in a bid to resolve issues on setting up a tea auction house in Srimangal, Maulvibazar, said commerce secretary.

“We will sit with Chittagong’s business people at an inter-ministerial meeting to find a solution,” said Secretary Mahbub Alam.

Most of the country’s tea are produced in Srimanagal while the only tea auction centre is located in the port city Chittagong. The traders of Chittagong have been opposing the government’s decision to shift tea auction to Srimangal.

In 2011, the government, after a meeting with tea growers and traders, had decided to set up an auction centre in Srimanagal “to facilitate the business.”

The decided that the persons who were conducting tea auction process in Chittagong would also oversee the same business in Srimangal.

Then Commerce Secretary M Ghulam Hussain presided over the meeting where tea growers.
