Several houses torched after abduction rumours in Khagrachari

Members of the Bangali community on Saturday torched several homes of indigenous people in two villages after a rumour of the abduction of a member of the community spread in the Matiranga upazila of Khagrachari district.

Rumours circulated that Abul Kalam, 30, son of Mokhlesur Rahman of Taindong Union, was abducted around 11am on Saturday. The abductee is an activist of a local unit of the opposition BNP, according to bdnews24.com.

It was alleged that Kalam was abducted from Bandarsing when he was carrying a passenger on his motorcycle from Bot tola.

Hearing this allegation, a section of angry members of his community torched several houses in Bandarsing and Bogapara, Matiranga upazila, Awami League General Secretary Subhash Chakma said.

Sheikh Mizanur Rahman of Khagrachari Police admitted the incident.
