Cabinet says no to extra Eid holiday

Update : 06 Aug 2013, 04:41 AM

The cabinet on Monday once again refused a proposal to begin the Eid holiday for public officials from tomorrow.

A minister who attended the meeting told the Dhaka Tribune that cabinet opposed the proposal of the public administration ministry as tomorrow is the only working day before Eid.

The decision frustrated many public servants, who were preparing to go on leave after attending office yesterday, as today is the public holiday of Lailatul Qadr.

The meeting expressed its view that public offices should remain open tomorrow as it is the only day for banking and giving emergency services to the public. Most of the ministers, state ministers and advisors to the prime minister agreed with the view and rejected the proposal unanimously.

However, sources in the public administration ministry said a large number of public servants had already been granted leave for tomorrow and had left for their homes.

According to ministry officials, the common practice for the 28th of Ramadan, which is tomorrow, is that most officers and staff come into the office for a little while and leave immediately. It is unlikely to be any different this year, the officials said.
