Update : 28 Aug 2013, 03:00 AM

Members of the Hindu community are celebrating Janmashtami, a religious festival marking the birth of Lord Krishna, across the country today [Wednesday] amid festivity and religious fervour, reports UNB.

Various organisations have arranged different programmes to celebrate the day.

The programmes include worship of Lord Krishna, puja, Geeta Jagna, Kirtan, discussions and peace processions.

The day is a public holiday, and President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition leader Khaleda Zia in separate messages have greeted the Hindu community members on this occasion.

The traditional Janmashtami procession is to be brought out from Dhakeshwari Temple in the capital in the afternoon. Several thousand Hindu devotees are expected to join the procession.
