BD student freed in Cairo

Update : 27 Aug 2013, 07:06 AM

A Bangladeshi student detained in Cairo on August 19 for violating curfew was released on Monday night, according to a Foreign Ministry official in Bangladesh on Tuesday.

The released, Belayet Hossain, is a student of Al-Azhar University, said Director General (EP) of the Foreign Ministry M Shameem Ahsan.

Another arrestee – M Nasir Mazumdar, a factory worker – will also have to return home as he was staying without a visa, the official added.

The management of the factory where he was working initially refused to provide a return ticket, but the employer provided the ticket following Bangladesh embassy’s intervention. Nasir Mazumdar will be flying back home on Thursday.

Both the arrestees were in Helwan police station in the capital of trouble-stricken Egypt.

Egypt’s military-backed government continued a nationwide crackdown on Mohamed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood that has led to the killing of hundreds of people over the last couple of weeks.
